Dear Pirates, We have enjoyed reading the Sand Game book with you. It was nice to talk with you about the book; we got a lot more out of the book this way. We hope you had as much fun as we did reading this book. It has been fun getting to know you I hope we keep in touch. From the Couch Potatoes Becca, Gabi, Sam, Matt and Ruth
Dear Friends How are you? We chose a scene on page 19 ("Whenever") until paragraph 2 line 3 ("...hapenning to me."). This paragraph reveals Uri Orlev's personality as a book - lover and an author. It also tells us what kind of stories he likes. He likes stories with action - about war and with a good in these stories are the heroes. He describes his feelings towards different kinds of stories and says that nothing will happen to him like to his heroes. But then the war broke out. Waiting to read your reflection, yours, The Pirates.
Dear Pirates When we read that scene, it brought tears to our eyes because of the wonderfulness of how the writer chooses his books. We all wish that we could write as beautifully as Uri Orlev does, and wish we could write litanies like he does.
Dear partners, Although we got to know each other through the book sharing project, we can't ignore what happened to the Columbia Space Shuttle. A tragedy that bonds us together. Therefore, we would like to share our feelings and hope you will share yours too. We were strongly shocked when we first heard that the Columbia Space Shuttle suddenly lost conact with ground control and then learned that it blew up a few minutes before landing. All Israelis were so proud of finally having an Israeli astronaut out there in space. It gave us some moments of comfort and joy to know that "one of us" was taking part in such important and significant experiments in order to help and improve human kinds' lives. It also gave us an opprotunity to put aside all the terrible news we have here almost every day. Those fine astronauts, who were carefully chosen, knew their mission was highly dangerous. Still, they put their lives at stake knowing their project was much more important. We are all so devastated and in grief but we also hope that one day, very soon, another Israeli astronaut will join a group of American astronauts and finish - successfully - the mission of Columbia Space Shuttle. Hoping for a better future, your Israeli friends from Hadera
Dear Pirates, We also were devistated to hear about the Columbia space shuttle crash. It was amazing to see the first Israeli astronaut in space. We know how upsetting it is to have lost Ilan Ramon. We were also upset to have lost six of our own astronauts. Our school is now raising money to plant trees in Israel in honor of Ilan Ramon's dream. We hope another Israeli takes the challenge soon. We are looking forward to reading and discussing the book with you, and getting to know you. From, The Coach Potatoes

Dear American Friends Our teacher has informed us that you are disappointed from us. First of all we would like to say we are sorry. Our letters and pictures were already ready last week but since there was a problem with the computer lesson and the schedule, we had to prospond it till next week. You see in our school we learn this project through four different teachers: English / literature / history and computer teachers. Due to some technical problems there was a delay. Please don't think that we are lazy or irresponsible. We are not!!! We promise to send the letters this week so you will have them when you come back. Have a great vacation. Yours Hadera Students
Dear Pirates, Thank you so much for the apology letter, but don't worry we are not mad and we dont think you are lazy. We are sorry we did not send our picture the computer was not working. We should be sorry that we took so long to send out our letter. Thank you for sending us a letter. From, The Coach Potatoes

Hi Mid-Peninsula Students - My name is Linda Ripps and I work with the International Book-Sharing Project. I know that the Hadera students received your letters and were really excited to get them. There have been some computer glitches on their end and they're really sorry that they've been unable to write back before you start your December vacation. I'm sure that when you get back to school on January 6th you will have a reply waiting for you. I live in New Jersey and I'll be visiting your school in January to talk to all of you about the Book-Sharing Project. I'm really excited because i've never been to Northern California before. I hope you all enjoy your winter break. I look forward to meeting you soon. Linda Ripps U.S. Project Manager International Book-Sharing Project
